Waking Up in Vagus: Stress Less
Listen, I'm no doctor, but I think the surprising link between the vagus nerve and the solar plexus chakra is pretty cool.
The solar plexus chakra
Governs: spleen, pancreas, stomach, kidneys, adrenals, liver, gallbladder, relationship with father and mother
Relates to: self-confidence, self-esteem, how we interface with other's energies, setting goals and achieving them
When imbalanced: powerlessness, anger, anxiety, easily overwhelmed by others' energy, control issues
When balanced and healthy: assertive, able to advocate for self, able to complete projects
The vagus nerve
This is a great primer on how the vagus nerve functions in the body.
Vagus Nerve Studies:
Vagus nerve stimulation and depression: Research shows that stimulating the vagus nerve helps patients with treatment-resistant depression
Vagus nerve stimulation in depression and epilepsy: Proves mood improvement in patients with depression, treats patients with epilepsy
Fear and anxiety are linked to vagus nerve dysfunction: Stimulating the vagus nerve can allay anxiety and mitigate fear response
More on the vagus nerve and its relationship to stress and anxiety in this podcast from Dave Asprey and Dr. Stephen Porges, who studies trauma and its relationship to the vagus nerve.
Proven methods for stimulating the vagus nerve
- Ice plunge: dunk your face in ice cold water, or do hot/cold showers.
- Deep breathing: activating your diaphragm stimulates the vagus nerve and slows stress response
- Chanting and singing: the vibrations from chanting and singing massage and stimulate the vagus nerve. GOOD NEWS FOR CAR KARAOKE LOVERS.
- Tactile vibrational therapy: this wearable is amazing, but you can probably get the same benefits by using a tuning fork right at your solar plexus chakra.
Happy vagus nerve-toning!
