Is This Thing On? How to Use a Pendulum And Not Feel Like An Idiot
I believe in a lot of weird shit, but when I first heard about using a pendulum to ask for answers I honestly rolled my eyes.
Listen, you gotta draw the line somewhere, right?
Anyway, my logical mind explained the movement of the pendulum as an extension of your subconscious—the user probably generates micro movements, which causes the pendulum to swing and give them the "answer" they'd probably like to hear.
Obviously, I had to try it. Cue the Kendrick Lamar. FYI, it's hard as shit to get a pendulum to move in any direction, even if you're consciously trying to spin it. Humbling (and
embarrassing) to say the least. So when I heard energetic practitioner Colleen McCann on my friend Jordan's podcast (it's 🔥) talk about using her pendulum, I knew I needed to learn more. Cool thing I learned: Calibrate your pendulum by asking it to confirm an easy question you know the answer to, like "My name is Michelle." If the answer is yes, pay attention to how the pendulum swings. That's your official "yes" for the rest of your session. Usually, clockwise is yes, counterclockwise is no... But apparently all pendulums reserve the right to be totally unique, so you need to calibrate it first.
Here's Colleen's take on the pendulum swing, how you can make one at home, and how to use it to answer whether you should mainline the first season of The OA this weekend:
OH: Can anything be considered a pendulum, or do you need to use a crystal on a chain?
C: Pendulums can be made of crystal, wood or metal can be hung on a metal chain or string. You can also try divining/dowsing rods. The most common combination is asingle-terminated crystal point on a metal chain. (If you want a piece that does double-duty by appealing to your sense of style & being rest assured that its always at the ready, check out this brand.)
Do you need to be psychic, or at least "tapped in" to your spirit guides to use a pendulum?
No, which is exactly why anyone that mentees with me learn how to use a pendulum right away. It is a great way to start to “tap-in.” It can be used as a visual tool to help someone learn how to FLEX THEIR INTUITIVE MUSCLE. Working with a pendulum can help with the following: staying grounded & focused, practicing breathwork, learning how to channel, trusting in your intuition, connecting with your guides & ultimately getting answers on your own. YAY!
For the skeptics out there—how can you tell that you're not just subconsciously controlling the pendulum swing ... Or does that not really matter?
I love a good skeptic because I used to be one! It’s a task unto itself to get a pendulum to swing on a conscious level let alone a subconscious level using your own “mind control”. A common comment when I watch someone using one for the first time? “This is harder than it looks.” It may not move for them or make very small circles at first. They’ll ask, "Why isn’t it swinging big?" like it is for me. It takes practice, practice, practice, to speak with spirits, stay grounded, AND build a rapport with the divination tool (the pendulum) you are using.
What kinds of questions should I ask?
The best part about your chosen line of questioning is that you can literally ask anything that is a “YES” or “NO “ based question. Asking emotional or opinion based questions will not work.
Is there a specific prayer or invocation I should say before I get cracking?
When doing any type of divination practices (Tarot, Pendulum, Crystals etc) or working with the spirit realm I open & close Sacred Space around myself & my clients. I ask that our guides to be present, to see clearly, to speak the truth & to lead with my heart while holding the vibration of a safe space.” I suggest that every person say something that resonates with them to open & close the container.
It’s just like when peeking into your closet. You open the closet door, check out all the possibilities for the day, pick an outfit (divination), close the doors back up & go on about your day. The closet is a container of energy, you are a container of energy & you are working with a container of energy with this practice.
